The disaster tested the hospital’s ability to offer its usual high standard of care. Amid the
harrowing spectacle of triage units ordering amputations, 15-hour days in the OR, and
shattered families facing an uncertain future, Haitian and American teams labored together
for months, by year’s end a handful of earthquake victims remained under Hôpital Sacré
Coeur’s care. At the same time, medical personnel have learned to adapt to unpredictable
challenges.
“The spirit of CRUDEM guided us and allowed us
to help the people of Haiti,” says Dr. Prévil. “Then
we used the lessons learned from the earthquake
to help us prepare for the cholera crisis.”
