By early February, the focus shifted to
patient rehabilitation. The hospital crafted
physical therapy tools and programs.
Volunteer Physical Therapists trained
hospital staff to assist. All over the
compound, patients tested new limbs
and coaxed injured arms and legs back
to optimum performance. John Lovejoy,
M.D., a Florida-based orthopedic surgeon,
had worked long hours with his son, John
Lovejoy, III, M.D., to remove crushed limbs;
he knew his patients faced a daunting
future without prosthetic replacements.
Adopting Sacré Coeur’s tradition of
collaboration between Haitian and U.S.
medical personnel, Dr. Lovejoy developed
a program that gives Haitians the tools
and skills needed to provide prosthetic
services.
